Charleston's Mission
Charleston, South Carolina full of southern charm, hospitality, sweltering heat and brewing storms. Upon arrival I was sure that South Carolina was on a mission to dishearten me. I got off to an inauspicious start, not knowing what I had originally signed up for. Never having been in Charleston I did not know what to expect. Determined not to leave me uninformed, God had a plan for Charleston and me. Visiting the market, one of the cities most popular attractions, is where it began. Adorned with thousand dollar sea-grass hand woven baskets, to Gullah cuisine's and cultures as well as souvenirs there was already more than what reached the wandering eye. But what stood out the most what was was not seen, the roots of the establishment. Prior to the Civil War the market was known for selling human cargo: African Slaves. Later that night a passage was read from Luke 8:13. "13 Those on the rocky ground are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away."
How selfish have I been, to come only thinking of the problems of my world, forgetting my history in the midst of my people's struggle. I had been guilty of only eager to receive the word of God when my ship was sinking, but what about those who had no ship to board. Those who were less fortunate, how often was I guilty of seeing someone in the street, gifting money only to forget them the following week. God was showing me the error of my ways, and allowing me to be apart of Charleston's Mission.
