There are so many amazing things that can be said about the mission trip. Each time I think about our time in Johannesburg, South Africa, I am literally still in awe. I absolutely loved seeing another part of God’s world, while serving with people whose hearts were so open and kind. If I could describe the mission trip in one small phrase, I would say that it was “all-encompassing” because it was challenging in multiple different areas. These challenges were not negative though, they were humbling and allowed me to view myself and the world differently.
This mission experience challenged me physically, by being able to use a compressor to oil the brick makers and molding the bricks. It was fun to participate in this physical labor and to see how ready everyone was to work. The Lord was our strength throughout this process. I was challenged mentally, through conversations that I had with team members and leaders/workers of Door of Hope ministry. There were spiritual challenges and God’s presence was real. He walked with us every step of the way, from the first plane ride and landing in ZA to our return to the US. Twice a day we participated in student led devotions, which were impactful. Many themes were discussed, such as: healing, fear, relationships, love, growth, etc.
I am glad that no matter where we go God is there and He allows us this privilege to participate in His work and serve His people. I am grateful that I could be a servant with many others and witness God’s love and beauty. I am grateful for Chowan’s Campus Ministry and how impactful it is to Chowan students and everyone it comes in contact with.
